We are a duo of textiles artists who handcraft intricate printed silks at our studio in York to create pieces of wearable art and some home interiors.
We met whilst studying at The University of Huddersfield. Ruth was studying Fashion Design with Marketing and Natalie, Costume Design with Textiles. Upon graduating in 2013, we decided we wanted to continue the skills we had learnt, and began working together to create Natalie & Ruth Textiles Ltd in York, Natalie’s home town. Natalie is a Textile Artist at Opera North, and Ruth is currently pursuing a MA in Fashion Textile Practices at The University of Huddersfield.
We specialise in screen printing, hand dyeing and devoré to create our colourful silk blends. From our studio we design, print and make every piece by hand. Initially influenced by the ideology of the kimono being used as a blank canvas and a second skin to its wearer, each creation is completely individual with colourful abstract prints that cannot be recreated or mass-produced. We handcraft bespoke pieces for our client base which we have built up through word of mouth, ranging from wall hangings and framed prints, to wearable art such as robes, scarves, pocket squares and bow ties.
As well as creating unique textiles we also run workshops in York and the surrounding areas, including Middleton Lodge, Richmond, and York Explore. On our workshops we share an insight in to our processes and teach the participants ‘The Art of Devoré’ encouraging their individual creativity.
